Family life is rooted in the unconditional love of God as witnessed by the Holy Family.  Option: Hannah and Elkanah offer their son, Samuel, to God in the Lord’s temple.  Mary and Joseph find Jesus in the temple.  He returns to Nazareth, obedient to them.

HOLY FAMILY

First Reading:  1 Samuel 1, 20-22. 24-28

Samuel was born of Hannah.  Elkanah and his entire household went up to offer their yearly sacrifice.  Hannah remained behind until Samuel was weaned.  She then readied a sacrifice and brought the child to Eli.  As Hannah met Eli she explained that Samuel was the child for which she prayed and as long as he lived. Samuel was lent to God.

Second Reading:  1 John 3, 1-2, 21-24

John reminds us of the immense love that God has extended to us.  This enables us to be called children of God.  If our hearts are pure, we keep the commandments, believe in the name of Jesus Christ and love one another we will know that God abides in us.

Gospel:  Luke 2, 41-52

When Jesus was twelve years old, the Holy Family traveled to Jerusalem to celebrate the feast.  Jesus did not return with the company.  Instead, he stayed in Jerusalem, sitting among the teachers while amazing them with his understanding and questions.  When found by his concerned parents, Jesus reminded them that he must be in the house of his Father.  Returning together, Mary kept these things in her heart.

Almighty and ever faithful Lord, gratefully acknowledging Your mercy and humbly admitting our need, we pledge our trust in You and each other.

Filled with desire, we respond to Your call for discipleship by shaping our lives in imitation of Christ.  We profess the call requires us to be stewards of Your gifts gratefully, cherish and tend them in a responsible manner, share them in practice and love with others and return them with increase to the Lord.

We, as parish and diocesan leaders, pledge to our ongoing formation as stewards and our responsibility to call our people to that same endeavor.

Almighty and ever faithful God, it is our fervent hope and prayer that You who have begun this good work in us will bring it to fulfillment.
