The days of fast & abstinence are Ash Wednesday & Good Friday.  All other Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence.  From the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday until the Easter Vigil of Holy Saturday, the Easter Fast should be observed so that with uplifted & welcoming hearts, we may be ready to celebrate the joys of the Resurrection.

The obligation to FAST applies only to Catholics between the ages of 18 & 59.  To fast means to limit oneself to one full meal during the day so as to experience hunger.  Abstinence affects all Catholics who have reached the age of 14 and means to abstain from meat and all meat products.  Those unable to abstain for a valid reason on any given Friday of Lent are asked to perform some other penitential act, or to abstain on another day.

Six months pregnant, Maria Lydia Lopez slipped into a coma on April 24.  In mid-May her family was about to remove life support and a priest was giving last rites when Maria sputtered, coughed and lurched in her bed.  “That was a sign for me, “ said her sister.  Intensive care was resumed and on Jun 9 Maria awoke from her coma.  Six days later, her twins were born.  Los Angeles doctors had thought all three would die; obviously God had other plans.  (Associated Press, July 8, 1999)

We have been in touch with our guest speaker for our Annual Father and Son Communion Breakfast to be held on Sunday, March 13, 2005. Father Gaudio has expressed his pleasure to return to his " old parish church " and to be able to speak to us both as an old friend and as a priest. We hope that our " Fathers and Sons " turn out for a good old welcome home for Father Dean.  Tickets will go on sale following the 5:30PM Mass, Saturday, February 19, 2005. The price for tickets will be Adults $ 6.00 and Children $5.00. Tickets sold at the door will be $ 1.00 extra for all tickets.  Please purchase your tickets early and avoid the surcharge. Make your plans for our breakfast. Don't forget to call grandpa and uncle Bill; I'm sure they would like to attend.  I hear that our Pastor and good friend, Father Dan has been bestowed the honor of being the Grand Marshal of the Saint Patrick's Day Parade to be held in Somerville, NJ this year. Please watch for further news.  The harvest is good, but the worker's are few. We are looking for a few good men. No matter how you paraphrase it, our society still is inviting the men of our parish to join our Holy Name Society. " Come on down ".

An apple, onion, and potato all have the same taste. The differences in flavor are caused by their smell. To prove this - pinch your nose and take a bite from each. They will all taste sweet. (Yeah, right!)
