“Suicide among the elderly and those suffering from serious illness or disability is not a ‘medical practice’ but a tragic health problem deserving a thoughtful, caring response.  No patient must ever be made to feel that his or her live is expendable.” Cathy Cleaver Ruse, National Catholic Register, 11/21/04

April 17, 2005 has been designated as World Day of Prayer for Vocations.  This is a day for all of us to pray that men and women will hear and respond to God’s Call in their lives.  The hope is that this will include the call to follow Jesus as priests, deacons, sisters and brothers.  Bishop Bootkoski will preside at a Eucharistic Holy Hour for Vocations at St Bernard Church in Bridgewater at 4:00 PM.

A four year old was at the pediatrician for a check up. As the doctor looked down her ears with an otoscope, he asked, "Do you think I'll find Big Bird in here?" The little girl stayed silent. Next, the doctor took a tongue depressor and looked down her throat. He asked, "Do you think I'll find the Cookie Monster down there?" Again, the little girl was silent. Then the doctor put a stethoscope to her chest. As he listened to her heartbeat, he asked, "Do you think I'll hear Barney in there?"  "Oh, no!" the little girl replied.  "Jesus is in my heart. Barney's on my underpants."

“On the weekend of April 16-17, John Conner, the founder of Grassroots Coalition for Environmental and Economic Justice, will come to Our Lady of Mercy to invite us to join in the Coalition’s effort to bring justice to the clothing industry.  He will bring clothes for sale, which are made in the US by workers who earn a living wage and use only organic cotton.  Currently, about two-thirds of the clothing sold in this country is made in sweatshops.  The Coalition is initiating this effort in many churches in the Metuchen Diocese.
