** Vocations Awareness Week * January 8-12 **

From the desk of  Rev. Randy J. Vashon, Director of Vocations

I pray that all parishes will be willing to celebrate this week so that all parishioners will be made more aware of their responsibility to pray for and encourage vocations to the priesthood and religious life. It is important that we all work together to promote and encourage vocations.

Jan. 5th, we invite men who are interested in the possibility of priesthood or have a vocation to the priesthood to an informal dinner with Bishop Bootkoski. This will be held at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Old Bridge at 7:00pm. Please talk to Father Herlihy if you’d like to attend or get more information on vocations within the Church.

Health News

With the flu season upon us it’s important to recall Bishop Bootkoski’s previous instruction about liturgical practices and the risk of contagion at Mass:

If you are sick (and this holds true at all times, not just flu season) you should refrain from drinking the Precious Blood from the chalice, receiving the Body of Christ on the tongue and exchanging the Sign of Peace by shaking hands. It is the responsibility of the individual to make this judgment. Of course, the wisest course of action, out of consideration for our fellow parishioners, is to stay home when we are sick.

Umbilical Cord Stem Cells

Two British scientists from Newcastle University used umbilical cord blood stem cells to build a tiny liver the size of a dime which can be used presently for drug testing and, in about five years, for treating human liver disease. There is also the possibility that in about 15 years, whole human livers could be created for transplantation.

These impressive breakthroughs have not gotten the publicity they deserve because so much attention has been focused on embryo-killing stem cell research, which has yet to provide any developments actually usable for human medical treatments.

Murphy’s Laws for 2007

Thanks to Felix Reid for this funny, funny piece

1.       Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.

2.       A fine is a tax for doing wrong. A tax is a fine for doing well.

3.       He who laughs last, thinks slowest.

4.       A day without sunshine is like, well, night.

5.       Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

6.       Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool.

7.       The 50-50-90 rule: Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong.

8.       It is said that if you line up all the cars in the world end-to-end, someone would be stupid enough to try to pass them.

9.       If the shoe fits, get another one just like it.

10.   The things that come to those that wait may be the things left by those who got there first.

11.   Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

12.   Flashlight: A case for holding dead batteries.

13.   The shin bone is a device for finding furniture.

14.   When you go into court, you are putting yourself in the hands of 12 people who weren't smart enough to get out of jury duty.
