March 12, 2006 Second Sunday of Lent

Pss II Seasonal prop

26: Gn 22:1-2,9a,10-13,15-18

Ps 116:10,15-19 Rom 8:31b-34 Mk 9:2-10

Abraham offers the ultimate sacrifice of thanksgiving, the gift of his very son.  This sacrifice prefigures the sacrifice of Jesus who died for us all.  In his transfiguration, Jesus discloses a suffering messiahship.

PLEASE PRAY FOR ALL OF OUR PARISHIONERS who are sick at home, in the hospital or in nursing homes, especially for John Vanderhoff, Gail Rotondo, Tony Gangitano, Frank Kozden, Christine Dyke, Gilda Rizzon, David King, Mary Pokotello, John Foxwell, Haley Weber, Blanche Ferarro, Adam Platukis, Kalman Sipos, Josephine Sarnoski, Roseanne Scaletti, Chris Perciante, and Diane Manley.

Please also pray for the soul of Patrick P. Puppo, who passed away recently.  Let us ask God through our prayers to reward him as only he can with a place of light, happiness & peace forever.

As you may know, the Memorial of St. Patrick falls on a Friday this year.  For members of the faithful who desire it, Bishop Bootkoski has commuted the penitential obligation on March 17 to the obligation to abstain from meat on another day in the Lenten season other than a Friday.

Second Sunday of Lent – March 12, 2006

Abraham was prepared to sacrifice his only son, Isaac. St. Paul reminds us that God Himself “did not spare His own Son.” Are my gifts to the Lord — of my resources, of my time, of myself — also sacrificial?

Diocesan News:

The Diocese of Metuchen ran its Pro-Life Poster Contest with this year’s theme of “It’s a Wonderful Life!”  Each man’s life touches so many others.  How do you touch the lives of others?  How is God calling you to help protect the unborn, the disabled and or the elderly?  To encourage participation from our CCD students, OLM Respect Life Committee with funds provided by the Holy Name Society ran a parish contest with $10 & $5 prizes for 1st & 2nd places in each grade.  The winners are:

Susan Callahan, Sophie Bischoff, Kalee Johnson, Leanne Naberschnig, Anna Simoncelli, Nicole Morris, Matt Franzyshen, Steven Bischoff & Shannon Stamile.  All entries were sent to the Diocese and those winners will be announced in a few weeks.

Speak Up Sessions: Sorting Through Responses

As Lent begins, 175 Speak Up Sessions have been held. This count includes special sessions for senior citizens and youth; those served by prison chaplains; and ones in Spanish and Polish. That’s a lot of responses to organize!

During March and April, well-trained volunteers will sort your feedback into categories. Six broad headings have been developed to help organize the scores of comments. It’s possible that additional categories will emerge. In reality, we won’t know which issues are of greatest concern until after all your responses are reviewed.

Remember, the synod is a process not an event! Part of this process involves discovering what’s on the minds and in the hearts of the People of God. Every issue that’s important enough to be raised, will be important enough to be considered.

I know now how devoted you are to God, since you did not withhold from me your own beloved son. Genesis 22:12

A young man was jogging in the early evening & decided to call ahead for pizza.  Just as he was to make the call, a homeless man asked for some spare change.  He reached into his sweat pants & pulled out a handful of change.  “Take what you need.”  The homeless man couldn’t believe his good fortune & said, “I’ll take it all.”  Just then he realized he had no change to make the phone call.  In turn he asked the homeless man if he could borrow some change.  The homeless man turned and held out the handful of coins. “Here, “ he said, “Take what you need.”

We must be like Abraham whose actions expressed those words “Take whatever you need.”  Abraham believed it so much that he was willing to sacrifice his own son.  God does ask, though, that nothing come before him and your relationship with him.  Not family, job, leisure or life itself. God asks for a lot, but God gives a hundredfold in return.

Father, Giver of Gifts, you ask that we be as generous as you.  You seek from us only one gift.  May we trust you enough to surrender ourselves and allow you to take whatever you need.  I ask this in Jesus’ name, the Divine Gift.  Amen.

The Humor of Youth
