Avoid Sin Like the Plague

They suppressed their consciences; they would not allow their eyes to look to heaven. Daniel 13:9.

When a woman discovered her home was on fire, she called the fire department. As she was rushing to get out of the house, the phone rang.  Thinking it was the fire department, she answered it.  The voice on the other end identified the caller as a salesman. “I can’t talk to you now,” the woman explained. “My house is on fire!”  The man had heard that one before.  “But this will only take a minute,” he explained.

This is what we tell ourselves when we’re sliding down the slippery slope of sin and denying that we’re going up in flames!  “It won’t take long, I’ll just look. I’m not hurting anyone.  Who will know?”  Little by little we dull our consciences and an act becomes a habit, which can become who we are and much worse.  A practical rule is do not fool around with sin.  Avoid it.  Flee from it as you would a raging fire.  Heavenly Father through your spirit shape our hearts, alert our minds and make sensible our consciences.  May sin not dull our sensitivity to your way.  We ask this in the name of Jesus who is ever obedient to your will. Amen.

The Family Life Office is pleased to announce the beginning of an outreach ministry to our aging Catholic population with the first in a series of workshops. “Celebrate Life” is slated for Saturday, April 22, 2006 from 10:00am to 2:00 pm at the St. John Neumann Pastoral Center, Piscataway, New Jersey. A holistic day of spirituality, education, entertainment and socializing is planned for seniors (age 55+).

Although the Order of Christian Funerals (OCF) permits a member or friend of the family to speak in remembrance of the deceased before the final commendation begins, this ‘eulogy’ is permitted in the Diocese of Metuchen on the following conditions:

1)                  only one person may speak

2)                  it should be brief, not to exceed three minutes.

3)                  A written copy (or a least an outline) must be given to the presider beforehand to guarantee it is properly focused and consistent with our Catholic faith and the ideals of Christian burial.

4)                  It is preferable that this ‘eulogy’ take place outside the context of the Mass, i.e., at the Vigil Service at the Funeral Home or at the Committal Rite at the Place of Committal, between Concluding Prayer and before the Final Blessing.
