THE MITRE ![]()
Why does the Pope wear a pointy hat?
To keep his
head warm - at least that's what it was for in the old days. Much like today,
the popes of antiquity were elderly men who needed protection from the cold. So
they wore simple cone-shaped hats, "the headgear of respectable men of the
period," when they went outdoors. The hats didn't become purely ceremonial
until much later.
The Catholic Encyclopedia describes the pointed hat that popes and bishops wear as "a
folding hat, made up of two equal, cone-shaped parts that rise to a divided
peak at the top." It gets its name from mitra, the Greek word for
"turban."
The mitre started out as a short pointed cap, but by the twelfth
century it had grown much taller and evolved from the closed cone shape into
the open, two-pointed - one in front and back like they do now. That created a
problem. The points reminded people so much of the devil that they became known
as horns ... so the popes rotated their hats ninety degrees. They've worn them
that way ever since.
