Stewardship

The second reading today contains the somber warning that Jesus is coming soon and will bring to each person the reward that his or her conduct deserves. Has my stewardship of the blessings entrusted to me been such that I could respond joyfully, “Amen! Come, Lord Jesus!”?

PLEASE PRAY FOR ALL OF OUR PARISHIONERS including: Helen Johnson, Tony Gangitano, David King, Haley Weber, Frank Stashak, Josephine Sarnoski, Elizabeth Connelly, Loretta Girard, Mary Pokotello, Blanche Ferarro, Sheila Del Mastro, John & Peter Foxwell, Dorothy Burke, Terese King, John & Christine Dyke, Peter Yazgier and Genevieve Casey.

Fadda, were ya in time to give him Last Rites?

It’s a phrase we hear in old movies. If you do a search on “Last Rites”  in the Catholic Encyclopedia (www.newadvent.org) you will not find a definition.

The following is what we should expect from a priest at a gravely ill loved one’s bedside: Anointing of the Sick. A sacrament of the Orthodox Eastern Church and the Roman Catholic Church that was formerly known as Extreme Unction and is the seventh sacrament. In it, a sick or dying person is anointed on eyes, ears, nostrils, lips, hands, feet, and sometimes, in the case of men, the loins, by a priest while he recites absolutions for sins committed.

The Roman Catholic Church teaches that through this sacrament, the sick and dying receive remission of sins, health of soul, and, if God wills, health of body. The sacrament may be shortened, and it may be given conditionally, as when there is doubt as to whether the recipient is living or as to whether he is baptized.

Anointing of the Sick is given only to persons seriously ill and in danger of death from internal causes; hence, it is not given before operations or in battle before attack.

Anointing of the Sick, the last confession (Penance), and the Viaticum (Eucharist given to the dying) in this order are the last rites of the church.

Unless your loved one can talk to confess their sins and swallow the Viaticum, don’t ask a priest for “Last Rites”, ask him to give them “Anointing of the Sick”.

The chief biblical text for Anointing of the Sick is James 5.14,15. "Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven."
