HISTORY
ALTAR SERVERS
Altar Servers are the young people who assist the priest at Mass.
Since the earliest days of the Church, Acolytes assisted the Priest.
Their number diminished and by the end of the 9th Century, the Synod
of Mainz decreed, "Every priest shall have a cleric or boy ... to
answer him at Mass and with whom he can chant the Psalms."
Today Altar Servers begin their training in the Third Grade,
though many join at a later age. They grow in rank and
responsibility. Ray Zupp trained the Altar Servers for many years. In
the days before Vatican II, as a part of serving Mass, they had to
respond to the prayers in Latin that had to be memorized. In addition
to serving, the Altar Servers go on an annual outing. In 1995, female
Altar Servers began assisting at Mass.
