HISTORY
HOLY NAME SOCIETY
On Sept. 20, 1274, Pope Gregory X exhorted the faithful to
increase their reverence for the name of the Redeemer. Holy Name
Societies throughout the world trace their origins to that event. The
basic requirement for membership in the Holy Name Society calls for
the reception of Communion in a body on the second Sunday of the
month. In addition, the Society sponsors spiritual exercises,
retreats, holy hours, and nocturnal adorations.
The Holy Name Society of Our Lady of Mercy was chartered in
November, 1949 and held its first meeting a month later on Dec. 12,
1949. Eugene Juronics was the first President and Edward Morrison the
first Vice-President. The society has been deeply involved in the
religious and social fabric of the parish since then. On Feb. 11,
1951, it held the first of its annual Father-Son Communion Breakfasts
at the Bound Brook Elks Club. Later in August of that same year, the
first Annual Retreat was held. These events have continued each year
since.
