HISTORY
ROSARY ALTAR SOCIETY
In the last quarter of the 15th Century, Alan de la Roche, a
Dominican friar, founded the Confraternity of the Most Holy Rosary.
On Oct. 2, 1898, Pope Leo XIII issued the present constitution of the
Confraternity. The only obligation of members is to say the 15
decades of the Rosary and meditate on the mysteries once a week. Open
to all Catholics, in the U.S., membership is restricted to women.
The Rosary Altar Society of Our Lady of Mercy was formed in
December, 1949. The first President was Madeline Carroll with Eileen
Fazekas serving as Vice-President. As with the Holy Name Society, it
has sponsored a myriad of activities that have enriched parish life,
including spaghetti dinners, penny sales, countless bake sales, bus
trips to Atlantic City, nights of recollection, Christmas Bazaars
that attracts buyers from all over the area, a Mother-Daughter
Communion Breakfast, plant sales, and the May Crowning. In addition,
members of the society have worked with other church groups on Bingo
and the variety shows.
